Choral conductor Ben Noble
Ave Verum Corpus
Clarinet Concerto
(soloist Katie Rawson)
Requiem
Our first concert with Ben Noble and the Richmondshire Choral Society brings together three extraordinary pieces that Mozart wrote at the end of his short and unbelievably productive life. We are joined by Katie Rawson, who will perform one of his most beautiful concertos, the only one he wrote for the clarinet. The exquisite motet Ave Verum Corpus begins the evening, and the concert ends with the dramatic Requiem, unfinished at the composer's death and completed by his pupil Sussmayer.
The portrait of Mozart is by Lang, and was never finished.

A Richmond choir performing with Richmond's orchestra, with a soloist from Richmond. Not bad for a small North Yorkshire town! Clarinettist Katie Rawson was educated at Richmond School and was until recently principal clarinet of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland.
Some hitherto unknown compositions by Mozart were only recently discovered. So there is more to look forward to. Meanwhile here are three of his greatest masterpieces in one evening. What could be better?
Which is the greatest requiem of them all? Faure, Verdi, Victoria, Brahms, Berlioz, Durufle, Britten, or Mozart? Come and decide.

Directed by Philippa Mo
with Ekaterina Chunikhina (oboe)

Concertos are an exciting exchange between soloist/s and orchestra, and Bach's Concerto for violin and oboe epitomises this. All three movements are full of energy and subtle interplay, especially the sublime slow movement. Albinoni does this too in his D minor oboe concerto. Locatelli was the great virtuoso violinist of his time, and his Christmas Concerto more than matches Corelli's more famous one.
Supporting young musicians is one of the keystones of the RCO project. Ekaterina is an extraordinary young talent from the Purcell School, already the winner of international competitions and in receipt of a full Royal Academy of Music scholarship. She has performed at the Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall & other London venues. We're sure North Yorkshire will give her a warm welcome.
Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on English Carols sets the tone for a selection of the familiar and the less known. Rebecca Clarke's witty Mixed up Carols, another solo from Ekaterina and a choral piece both tbc, and some happy English music to lead us into the audience carols.
Free concert programme and carol sheet included in the ticket price.
